“Sometimes, people don’t want to talk about the elephant in the room. In Texas, of course that means the population is increasing because of the growth of Latinos. We were supposed to get four new minority opportunity districts, [but] that went down to two. District 35 is one of them, and my opponent [Austin Congressman Lloyd Doggett], the last time I looked, was not a minority,”
-Sylvia Romo
Doggett is not the reason that Texas didn't get 4 new minority seats, Rick Perry and his cohorts are to blame. As far as anyone running for office, a candidate should be elected because of his/her abilities, leadership skills, vision, character and competence and for no other reason. Race should not play into the political process. You'd think we'd be beyond all this by now and apparently by Sylvia Romo's quote, well, she just doesn't get it.
Congressman Lloyd Doggett has and will remain to be an effective advocate for schools, veterans, health care and retirement security. Doggett's service to our state fits well with the neighborhoods that have now been joined from South San Antonio to North Austin.
Republicans believe District 35 is mostly Hispanic voters, so in order to benefit the GOP they are counting on and hoping that Hispanics will vote for a Hispanic candidate. We must show Republicans that Hispanics are not going to be pawns in their crooked game of politics. Republicans are counting on the Hispanic voter to take the bait and assist them in unseating their biggest threat and that threat being Lloyd Doggett. I ( and so should you) find it very offensive that Republicans believe we as Hispanics are incapable of and wouldn't look at a candidate for what they have done for their constituents, but instead vote for a candidate for their ethnicity, skin color or Hispanic surname. So what if Doggett is white! Doggett's experience and track record, by far, makes him the better advocate for this district and for Texas, much more than the Hispanic candidates Sylvia Romo and Maria Luisa Alvarado from San Antonio.
Doggett is the mover and shaker we need in Washington. I want experience representing myself and my community. I want a doer, not a person who wants to give it a try. I want someone who I know and that works for the betterment of my self and the state of Texas and right now that candidate is Congressman Lloyd Doggett.
